Drain basics
Both sewer and stormwater drains take the waste or stormwater away from the home. Sewer water is taken to a sewer main, deep in the ground. Stormwater is usually taken to the street and exits to the curb and gutter. This is all usually done by gravity. The wastewater flows downhill to the sewer main – stormwater flows downhill to the street.
How does a blocked drain get blocked?
There are three main reasons why drains get blocked.
1. Movement
The earth is constantly moving and because your pipework is underground, if the ground moves, then so does the pipework. This causes the pipework to crack or bend causing blockages.
2. Trees & Plants
If there are open joints in the pipework, trees and plant roots are another major cause of blockages. The roots seek out the moisture on the pipework and continue to grow, filling the pipes with a mass of roots.
3. Foreign Objects
People put things down their drains that shouldn’t go down there all the time. From a build-up of hair over time to household items that are intended for rubbish bins as opposed to drainage systems.
What's involved in clearing a blocked drain?
If the pipework is full of wastewater, we usually start by sending a high-pressure jetting machine down. This will often clear some of the blockage. Some drains can be unblocked with the use of plungers, but this is often just a quick fix, as the source of the blockage can’t be properly determined unless we do further investigation with a waterproof camera.
So, the majority of the time, we use our waterproof inspection camera to get a look at why the drain was blocked in the first place. This usually gives us enough information to work out a solution to ensure the blockage doesn’t happen again any time soon.
We may have to dig up roots or replace old pipework.

Clean, quick and no hassle
These guys are great! Can’t recommend them highly enough. Such nice people and get the job done properly. They’re clean, quick and no hassle to deal with. The best thing was, I knew exactly what the job would cost me before they did the work. Nice not to have any financial surprises. My last experience with a plumber was horrible. I’ll definitely use Pro Plumber again.

Fixed my blocked toilet
I called Chris from Pro Plumber for a quote to fix my blocked toilet. He was at our place the same afternoon and fixed the toilet in no time at all. He then offered a free inspection of the rest of my bathroom plumbing and found an issue with the drainage system. We booked in a return visit within days and he fixed that too. Such a great service and not as expensive as I thought it would be.
