RAINWATER HARVESTING

Water is a precious resource and although we tend to use treated drinking water to wash our cars and water our gardens, having a rainwater harvesting system allows you to catch and use rainwater that would otherwise flow down your street and out to our rivers and ocean.

INSIGHTS: RAINWATER HARVESTING

What are some common rainwater harvesting issues?

As Pro Plumbers, we’ve installed and repaired a lot of rainwater harvesting systems. Here are some common things we deal with:

  • New rainwater tank system installed

  • Rainwater tank not filling up during rain

  • Irrigation not working as it should

  • Pumps not working/ low pressure

  • Scheduling/programming problems in electronic irrigation systems

If any of these points ring a bell, contact Pro Plumber for a free quote. Scroll down and read through a bunch of helpful tips and insights into rainwater harvesting and some of the issues you might experience.

Rainwater harvesting basics

In Australia, we know the cost of water is increasing every year. When there’s a drought, we’re placed on water-usage restrictions, meaning we can only use mains-connected water at certain times and for certain purposes. Water is a precious resource in this country and, although we tend to use treated drinking water to wash our cars and water our gardens, having a rainwater harvesting system allows us to catch and use rainwater that would otherwise flow down our streets and out to our rivers and ocean.

A rainwater harvesting system allows you to continue to maintain your garden or lawn without any restrictions. It also has the potential to reduce your water usage bills as rainwater can be piped back into the house and be used for things like toilets, washing machines and dishwashers.

Rainwater can be used to:

  1. water the garden (irrigation)
  2. wash the car
  3. flush toilets
  4. wash clothes
  5. clean dishes

Rainwater for use in the garden

Imagine having breakfast in the morning while watching your garden and lawns being watered automatically!

We have years of experience installing and maintaining all types of irrigation systems so you can do exactly that. Most importantly, these automated systems allow the garden to be watered during the night or early morning when water is not being instantly evaporated from the harsh Australian sun.

The efficient use of your rainwater will save you on water usage plus it will improve the health of your lawn and plants by watering them at the most effective times of the day.

Rainwater for consumption

Although the rainwater collected is usually clean, living in metro Sydney, there are still cases where the water will be slightly soiled with airborne contaminates. This is why we recommend that you do not use untreated rainwater for human consumption. That doesn’t mean that we can’t install a system that is fit for human consumption though…

There are many ways to tackle this problem: mini treatment plants, filters or reverse osmosis systems can be easily installed to remove the contaminants and provide beautiful, clean drinking water for the whole family to enjoy.

What happens if the tank runs dry?

Never fear there is always a solution! If you think that the tank is getting low, we can provide mains water top-up systems. This means that if your tank drops below a certain level, you can top the tank back up to the desired level by using the water from your house mains connection. This way you can continue to use the irrigation, garden taps or any other services you have connected.

We can even take the hassle out of monitoring the levels by installing an electronic system that will run the top-up for you. Get in contact today and we will be more than happy to explain system setups to get you going green and save money in the process.

Going green

While rainwater harvesting systems will no doubt save you money (and time if you have it properly connected to an irrigation system), you are also helping out the environment. Every little bit helps in the overall health of the planet. If each household in an average Sydney suburb installed a 2,000-litre tank, that would equate to a staggering 8 MILLION LITRES of harvested water. That’s a HUGE amount of stored water that would otherwise be flowing to our rivers and oceans.

Fixed my blocked toilet

I called Chris from Pro Plumber for a quote to fix my blocked toilet. He was at our place the same afternoon and fixed the toilet in no time at all. He then offered a free inspection of the rest of my bathroom plumbing and found an issue with the drainage system. We booked in a return visit within days and he fixed that too. Such a great service and not as expensive as I thought it would be.
