RISING DAMP
Rising damp is a surprisingly common issue in properties right across Sydney. Nearly always found in older homes, rising damp can warp the foundations of your home and create an unhealthy place to live in, with constant mould growth, that’s almost impossible to eradicate without fixing the source of the problem – the rising damp.

What are some common rising damp issues?
Your Pro Plumbers have a lot of experience fixing rising damp, so it’s highly likely we’ve experienced (and fixed) any problem you might have with this. Here are some common problems we see:
Brickwork is always damp/wet

Constant wet/damp smell
- Mould that just keeps returning
If you’re experiencing any of these problems in your home, contact Pro Plumber for a free quote. Scroll down and read through a bunch of helpful tips and insights into rising damp and some of the issues you might experience.
Rising damp basics
Rising Damp is called “Rising Damp” because the moisture starts at the base of the wall and moves slowly upwards.
Water rises up the wall by capillary action through the brick or blockwork to the point where evaporation occurs. As the dampness evaporates from the wall into the atmosphere, the salts that had been diluted by the water will accumulate in the surface layer of the masonry – the first point where the dampness evaporates (usually the first 10mm at the base of the wall/just above your skirting boards).
As salts accumulate within this shallow depth of masonry, the pores of the masonry become more and more blocked with salts which slows down the evaporation.
As time passes, the salts continue to damage more and more. Before you know it, 10mm becomes 20mm and so on. The salt damage will keep rising up the wall until the weight of the water has enough downwards force (from gravity) that the water cannot rise any higher.
From this point on, the dampness will continue to evaporate from the already salt-affected areas, accumulating to the point that the surface of the masonry eventually crumbles to dust! This is generally not a quick process but it can be absolutely devastating to a home. After years of this silent killer developing, the rising damp will become a structural issue and the cost of repairing this can be quite high. This is the kind of thing you want to have fixed sooner rather than later.
Rising damp in brickwork
Rising damp with exposed brick will normally show up first as deterioration of the mortar between the bricks. You may see general discolouration and mould (in low-lit areas). After some time the bricks will start to crumble too and they’ll eventually collapse, reducing the structural integrity of the house.
Rising damp in render
Rising damp in render will usually show up as bubbling paint, salt deposits, stains and render breaking down to its base components (appearing as sand and cement dust).
What's involved in resolving damp issues?
Removing groundwater is the main way to resolve rising damp issues. This can be in the form of installing underground pipework and gravel pits to remove ground and surface water quickly and effectively. In some cases, houses that have soil above the damp course of the wall need the soil excavated and landscaped to prevent water from sitting against the wall.
This ensures we’re removing the issue entirely so it doesn’t happen again, rather than just temporarily fixing it. Of course, there are various “quick fixes” out there but these aren’t fixes at all. They’re designed to either mask the issue or buy some time. Really, all these quick fixes do is prolong the pain and, in the long run, you’ll end up paying more to get it fixed properly.

Clean, quick and no hassle
These guys are great! Can’t recommend them highly enough. Such nice people and get the job done properly. They’re clean, quick and no hassle to deal with. The best thing was, I knew exactly what the job would cost me before they did the work. Nice not to have any financial surprises. My last experience with a plumber was horrible. I’ll definitely use Pro Plumber again.

Fixed my blocked toilet
I called Chris from Pro Plumber for a quote to fix my blocked toilet. He was at our place the same afternoon and fixed the toilet in no time at all. He then offered a free inspection of the rest of my bathroom plumbing and found an issue with the drainage system. We booked in a return visit within days and he fixed that too. Such a great service and not as expensive as I thought it would be.
