Subsoil drainage basics
A subsoil drain is a drainage system that is installed to remove excess water from the surrounding soil around homes, garages, retaining walls and basements.
The perforated or slotted pipes are placed underground and are usually covered by geotextile material to stop soil from entering it. Ground water enters the pipe works and is taken away into the stormwater network servicing your property.
What are the benefits of subsoil drainage?
Having these types of water controlling drainage systems installed in your home is common practice. There are many exceptional benefits that come with subsoil drains:
- Excess water entering the landscape/ building is decreased extremely
- The amount of salinity (salt) present in the soil is lessened
- The soil is overall strengthened allowing it to be healthier
- Aeration of the soil is increased, meaning healthier plants and grass overall
- Mixed with fertiliser, when the soil is drained of excess water, your garden will produce higher quality fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants
- Structural damage to the home is drastically decreased, specifically walls and landscaping, as water doesn’t enter their range
- The stability of the ground is also improved, helping with the building foundations not moving due to soil moisture
Creating effective subsoil drainage will give longevity to your home and provide for a more healthy environment. It’s a long-term solution that will pay for itself for years to come.
Types of subsoil drainage systems
The most common and most effective type of subsoil drain is when geotextile material is applied to special pipes. This type of pipe has many different attributes and characteristics which allow water to seep through efficiently. It allows for the highest flow of water to be removed from the site, decreasing the potential water damage.
Moreover, the geotextile material serves to limit the amount of soil entering the pipe. The chance for blockages is decreased by preventing soil and other smaller particles from entering the pipe, allowing it to better remove water.
Other main types of subsoil drainage include:
- Mole drainage – mainly used for places that experience heavy amounts of rainfall
- Groundwater pumps – for places near streams and alike to ensure the excess water does not enter the area
- Subsurface pipes – similar to subsoil
- Interceptor drains – usually used when water is constantly in the soil. it targets to collect and remove the water
.
Installing subsoil drainage
A qualified plumber can determine which type of subsoil drainage is best suited for the area it will be installed in. Factors such as the land area, average rainfall and the type of soil are considerations we need to take into account.
This isn’t the kind of project you should do yourself. Incorrect subsoil drainage can actually make the problem worse and you should engage a fully certified plumber to ensure you have the most effective and long-lasting subsoil drain system.

These guys are great! Can’t recommend them highly enough. Such nice people and get the job done properly. They’re clean, quick and no hassle to deal with. The best thing was, I knew exactly what the job would cost me before they did the work. Nice not to have any financial surprises. My last experience with a plumber was horrible. I’ll definitely use Pro Plumber again.

Fixed my blocked toilet
I called Chris from Pro Plumber for a quote to fix my blocked toilet. He was at our place the same afternoon and fixed the toilet in no time at all. He then offered a free inspection of the rest of my bathroom plumbing and found an issue with the drainage system. We booked in a return visit within days and he fixed that too. Such a great service and not as expensive as I thought it would be.
